Summer Grill Preparations:

If your grill has been covered during the winter months, it’s a good idea to perform the following items to prepare your grill for spring and summer grilling seasons.

CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS.

The trade-off for gas grills’ swankier appeal is that maintaining them and keeping them safe requires some extra attention. To make sure your gas grill hasn’t sprung a dangerous leak and that everything’s working properly before you get grilling, brush your gas lines with soapy water and check for bubbles—which indicate a crack—when the gas is running. If you spot any, tighten your connection or replace the line.

MAKE YOUR OWN CLEANING SOLUTION.

Mix one part water and one part distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle and go to town on your grill’s interior. Replace the lid, let the solution soak in for an hour or so, and cooked-on residue and gunk should be broken up enough to easily wipe off when you’re done.   After a thorough cleaning, coat the grates with vegetable oil. If you put them in the oven at 450 degrees for a couple of hours you can “cure” them and ready them for reuse.

Regardless of type of grill you have, always refer to your owner’s manual before cleaning. If you’ve been diligent and kept your grill up all these years and the manual is nowhere to be found, you can access most brands with a quick Google search.

HAVE YOUR PROPANE CYLINDER REFILLED

Take your propane cylinder for inspection and refill.   One of the last things you want to happen while grilling is for your tank to run out of propane.

Quality Oil secures $5k grant for Samaritan Colony women’s center

2/22/2019 – Richmond Observer

ROCKINGHAM — A planned treatment center for women with substance abuse issues is one step closer to becoming a reality.

Quality Oil and Gas recently applied for and received a $5,000 grant from Motiva (Shell) for Samaritan Colony. The Rockingham company is a distributor of Shell petroleum products.

“Through our affiliation with Shell, I learned about the Community Charity Fund and their mission to help with substance abuse treatment programs,” said Gene McLaurin, president of Quality Oil and Gas.

“I’m always looking for ways to help local organizations and my friend, Harold Pearson, had told me about the work he, Constance, the Samaritan staff and his board were doing to open a treatment center for women,” he added. “I wrote the grant application and was pleased to learn we had been approved.”

FEBRUARY 2O1O

North Carolina’s New UST Operator Training Requirements
Dear UST Owners and/or Operators:

The NCDENR UST Section has implemented UST operator training requirements as mandated in the federal Energy Policy Act of 2005. North Carolina’s program will train UST operators in accordance with the federal requirements by August 8,2012. Each UST facility Owner must identify at least one Designated Operator and at least one Class C Operator for each UST facility. A Designated Operator is an employee of the UST owner or operator who has responsibility for the day-to-day aspects of operating and maintaining the UST system, including recording keeping. A Class C Operator is an employee of the UST owner or operator who has daily control over fuel sales and dispensing, and is responsible for responding to alarms and emergencies. The UST Section will train Designated Operators, and Designated Operators will in turn train Class C Operators.

Operator training for Designated Operators will be completed one facility at a time during each facility’s next scheduled compliance inspection some time between now and August 2012. UST owners will be notified ahead of time of a scheduled compliance inspection that includes operator training. To receive a “Trained Operator Certificate,” a Designated Operator must be present at the inspection, he/she must pass an “Operator Regulatory Knowledge Assessment” and the facility must be in compliance with federal and state requirements.

The enclosed brochure explains North Carolina’s operator training program in detail. The brochure describes
who must receive training, what topics are covered during training, and how and where training is conducted.

Should you have any additional questions, please contact the UST Section Permits and Inspection Branch at (919) 133-8486. For additional copies of the enclosed documents please visit our website at   http ://www.wastenotnc.org/UST/ustmain.html.

Propane Grill Do’s:
  • Always use the grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Do not bring propane cylinders indoors or into an enclosed space such as a garage or basement.
  • Always follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions and keep written materials and manuals in a safe, accessible place.
  • Make sure the grill burner controls are turned off. Keep the cylinder valve closed when not in use.
  • Make sure the gas grill is shut off and cooled off before covering your grill after use.
  • Always use or store cylinders in an upright, vertical position. Store them outdoors away from sources of ignition.
  • When you have your cylinder refilled, have your supplier check for dents, damage, rust or leaks.
  • After filling, take your cylinder home immediately. Keep your vehicle ventilated with the cylinder valve closed and plugged or capped. Do not leave the cylinder in your car.
  • When your grill is not in use, cover disconnected hose-end fittings and burner air intakes with small plastic bags, or obtain protective fitting caps from your propane supplier to keep out dirt, insects and moisture.
  • Before lighting your propane gas grill burner, use a leak-detection solution to check all connections for tightness.
  • Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks.
  • If there is a significant and uncontrollable release of gas or a fire, call the fire department immediately and move all people and pets away from the unit.
Propane Grill Don’ts:

Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Diesel Exhaust Fluid and SCR, according to engine manufacturers, improves overall fuel economy by approximately 5% compared to competing technologies, and achieves NOx reductions in excess of 90%.  New truck engine manufactures will comply with the emission standards imposed by the EPA Clean Air Act that came into effect on January 1st 2010.  Under the new regulations, most engine manufacturers have chosen the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system as the most efficient way to meet these clean air standards.
